Grey Iron, Vermicular Graphite Iron & Ductile Iron

Grey iron, CGI (vermicular graphite iron) and ductile iron are graphite cast irons, differing mainly in graphite morphology.
  • Grey iron: Flake graphite. Excellent damping, thermal conductivity and machinability, low strength. Used for machine beds, pump housings.
  • CGI: Vermicular graphite. Balanced thermal conductivity and strength, widely applied in engine cylinder heads.
  • Ductile iron (nodular iron): Spherical graphite. High strength and toughness, lower damping and heat conductivity. Suitable for load‑bearing parts such as hubs and steering knuckles.
